Alonnisos is a little Greek island situated in the North-west of the Aegean Sea. It is an island with majestic scenery that invites you to walk in every direction from just outside your door.
Most of the walking tours in this book set off from the villages Palia Alonnisos (the old village) and Patitiri, which means that there is no need for transportation. The small size and the shape of the island make it possible for this book to be both a walking and swimming guide.
The beaches around Palia Alonnisos and Patitiri can be reached on foot within 15 to 45 minutes. Most of the longer walks pass by a beach, where it is possible to take a dip in the clear water. If there is a tavern on the beach, this is mentioned in the individual walking tours. The walking tours that pass the village Palia Alonnisos or one of the fishing villages (Patitiri, Rousoum, Votsi or Steni Vala), all have something to offer to eat or drink.
The hilly countryside of Alonnisos has a wide variety of landscape and vegetation with a great many possibilities to experience nature. There are areas covered with low bushes with different kinds of scented herbs and there are dense pine-woods, where even at midday the light of the sun doesn't shine through. Other parts of the island are covered with gnarled trees like holly oaks, stone oaks, cedar and arbutus (strawberry trees), and along the coastline there are many picturesque bays with small and big beaches in different colours according to the geology of the cliffs. In addition to this the many fantastic views are a wonderful experience in themselves. |
